Have you ever stopped to think why we celebrate Valentines Day on February 14th each year. Why valentines roses, why each year on February 14th romance flourishes all over the world as we all show our love for each other as we send flowers on valentines day? What is the importance of flowers on Valentines Day?
Why Flowers for Valentines
According to legend Valentines day flowers started back in 496 AD when Pope Gelasius declared February 14th as a day to honour St Valentine. From this day on he has been our Patron Saint of Lovers. So why Valentines Day Roses? Why do we send flowers for Valentines Day?
Well Valentine was a Christian priest back in the third century AD and the Emperor at the time was Emperor Claudius who believed that his army of men would make better soldiers if they didn’t have wives and children so he passed a law that banned marriages.
St Valentine who was a strict Catholic Priest defied the Emperor by breaking the law and continuing to carry out marriage ceremonies in secret. When news of this reached the Emperor Claudius he was sent to jail and given the death sentence. Whilst in jail St Valentine gained massive support and many people visited him with flowers and notes of support he also befriended the jailor’s daughter to whom on his execution he left a note signed Your Valentine.
