Mothering Sunday
In the United Kingdom Mothering Sunday, also called "Mother's Day", falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is three weeks before Easter Sunday. It is thought to have originated from the 16th century Christian practice of visiting one's mother church, where you were baptised, once a year.
This meant that most mothers would be reunited with their children on this day. A majority of historians believe that young apprentices and young women in servitude were released by their masters that weekend in order to visit their families.
Mothers Day Flowers
Mothers Day Flowers is now more generally used to show appreciation to one's mother, but it is still recognised in the historical sense by some churches, with attention being paid to Mary the mother of Jesus as well as the traditional concept of 'Mother Church'.
Some scholars claim that Mothers Day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, where a festival to Cybele was celebrated. This festival was held around the Vernal or Spring Equinox, and then later in Rome from the Ides of March.
Mothers Day Gifts
The Romans also had another holiday, called Matronalia that was dedicated to Juno, and it is believed by some that mothers were usually given gifts of flowers on this day.
Rose Sunday is another name that is sometimes used as an alternative title for Mothers Day, as can be seen by the purple robes of Lent being replaced in some churches by rose-coloured ones. This name possibly also refers to the tradition of posies of flowers being collected and distributed at the service and given to all the mothers, and then later to include all women in the congregation.
